The wonderful Kolkata winter is gradually saying good-bye but the 19th of February still offered perfect weather as an ideal adventure Sunday.  The Wheels Club hosted their Wheels Car Convoy and Carnival, an annual feature amongst the club members.  Almost 200 cars participated where individual car owners brought their personal cars, with friends and family, to participate in the convoy.  Two columns of about 100 cars each were flagged off by the DC Traffic, Shri Nesakumar, from Eden Gardens at about 1.30 pm.  All cars were decorated with a Wheels flag on their bonnet and with blinkers flashing for all the cars, the convoy headed for New Town.  This magnificent convoy, gliding along a green corridor which had been created for the event, where all traffic was halted on either side to allow the convoy to pass, was a sight to behold.  There was a grandeur to this convoy of fluttering flags and flashing lights as it rolled down the centre of the city, and it felt special to be part of this magnificent fleet.

The convoy progressed towards Park Street, Park Circus, Darga Road, Parama Island, Chingrighata flyover, Eco Tourism Park and finally halted at The Eco Urban Village, which was the sight of the carnival.  A number of car manufacturers had their automobiles on display in the hope of luring car lovers, and the venue had a variety of cuisines to choose from.  Members were there with their families to enjoy a Sunday in the sun, away from the madding crowd where they were entertained by 3 different bands over the course of the evening.

A very popular source of adventure and fun were the ATV (all-terrain vehicles) and off boarding rides offered at a man-made dirt track, next to the Eco Urban Village.  It was a mini version of dune-bashing.  Men, women and children participated in and enjoyed this new form of sport available in Kolkata.

The icing on the cake, however, was the wheel stunts on display.  Bicycle, motorbike and car stunts, all of them to be witnessed at one venue in Kolkata, perhaps for the first time.  The jaw-dropping sighs, the wide-eyed ‘Wows’, the adrenaline rush combined with the smell of burning rubber, the wheelies in the air, screeching 360 degree car turns and the flying dust, all combined to make one amazing Kolkata Sunday which only left one thirsting for more.
