On 18th February, World CSR day, the US Consulate hosted a talk at the American Center on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: American and Indian Approaches’, moderated by Ms. Nayan Mitra. Panelists included Dr. Tehnaz Dastoor who had helped establish the First-of-its-Kind Unicef-CII CSR Hub in the country, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, the framer of the Companies Act 2013, Dr. Sumona Ghosh Assistant Professor at St. Xavier’s College and Ms. Sukanya Patwardhan Global Head Learning and Development at WNS Global Services.  Two audio-visual presentations were also made by Amway and Akshaya Patra.

Dr. Dastoor kicked off the discussions by highlighting the different approaches to CSR in the US and India and her experiences in working with corporates and governments in both countries. She highlighted the fact that India was the only country to have legislated CSR through its Companies Act 2013 whereas in the US it was based more on the notion of philanthropy. However, corporates in the US took a more ‘global’ and ‘collaborative’ approach to CSR,  leveraging resources and skills whereas CSR activities were more localized and the notion of collaborative funding and work was in its nascent phase in India. Dr. Chatterjee spoke about the Companies Act and the stringent measures put in place to ensure transparency and accountability by corporates. Dr. Ghosh highlighted the fact that most students surveyed by her knew little about CSR as the subject was not part of most course curriculums in colleges in India today. Finally Ms. Patwardhan shared her research on the need for digital learning in schools.

Following a Q&A Session the US Consul General Mr. Craig hall released ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: Cases and Development after the Legal Mandate’ edited by Nayan Mitra.
