Weavers Studio Centre for the Arts and Alka Jalan Foundation presented “Beyond Borders” on 11th Feb., a scintillating performance of the Rubab and the Santoor in synchrony with each other and with nature.  The venue and ambience were spectacular − the beautifully manicured lawns of Ms. Alka Jalan’s home in Ballygunge played host, where beaming red Poinsettias graced the front of the stage, and a near full moon smiled down upon this unusual show.

Pandit Sandip Chatterjee on the Santoor was accompanied on the Rubab by Kengo Saito and  Debjit Patitundi  on the Tabla.

The evening performance started with a Vilambit Khayal in Raag Bhupali, followed by a Dhrut Khayal in Raag Yaman.  It was a treat to hear Kengo Saito and Pandit Sandip Chatterjee match note for note, nuance for nuance and their comfort level of playing together was palpable and there for all to see.  This was followed by a light composition in Raag Khamaj.  Debjit Patitundi a young and talented Tabla player and a student of Pandit Shubankar Banerjee also showed his prowess on the percussion instrument.  The last performance was a request from the audience for an Afghan song.  This was impromptu but it was a delight to watch the two musicians play together on a song that had not been rehearsed before.  Such is the power of music.

Kengo Saito is a musician, composer and a distinguished Rubâb player, a unique string instrument which originated in Afghanistan.  Pandit Sandip Chatterjee’s musical talent and virtuosity on the Santoor, have won him many awards and laurels. The two maestros have also performed together in France in the past.
