The Calcutta Club hosted its annual debate on 21st January entitled – “In the opinion of the house, surgical strike is the magic pill for all maladies”. The surgical strike reference was the strike for ‘demonization’.

Speaking for the motion were BJP Spokespersons Shaina NC and Sambit Patra, as well as Baba Ramdev and against the motion were Jawhar Sircar, Sugata Bose and Kanhainya Kumar. It must be said that the topic itself was weighted against those speaking for the motion, as “surgical strikes” however effective can hardly be the solution for “all maladies”. Nonetheless, Sambit Patra spoke ardently; drawing the crowd into his argument through recalling imagery based on Ma Durga executing a surgical strike on Mahishasura and Netaji against the British, Raja Ram Mohan Roy against sati and child marriage and Swami Vivekananda addressing the World Congress as “brothers and sister”.  However, the argument was won by the opposition who demanded surgical strikes not against demonetization but rather against poverty, malnutrition, gender discrimination, exploitation and religious hatred as espoused by Sugata Bose. Kanhaiya Kumar, the most impassioned speaker amongst all and spoke of how the Indian citizenry has been hood-winked through masterful branding of, for example the 56 inches chest, Modi’s or Pamela Anderson was any ones guess, and any opposition to the center’s ideology was immediately demolished through their trolls operating in the social media space and by being branded anti-national or a terrorist.
